Pockets of Strength
Where are your hidden strengths?
The title I chose for my blog is Hidden Pockets of Strength. The tile is inspired by the idea that we all have strengths that we may be aware of but some are inner strengths that we access only when needed. But what if these strengths were available to us every day? What if we did not need adversity for us to access our strengths?
Many mothers are amazed by their own courage and strength when it comes to protecting or advocating for their children. Other strengths that are sometimes hidden are leadership ability, perseverance, integrity, strategic thinking, empathy, self-awareness, creativity, and positivity, among others. Many of us have strengths that we utilize at times but are we do not acknowledge and are not part of our identity.
What if we had those strengths with us at all times, say in a hidden pocket, so we can be our regular selves but have an awareness and confidence that we are strong in many ways. Knowing and owning these strengths can be empowering.
We may not be aware of all our strengths. Some strengths that we seldom are not needed in our everyday lives. An example may be the ability to keep a cool head and clear mind when attacked by another person or in dealing with a natural disaster. We may not know we have that strength because the circumstances that require it have not occurred.
We may also have strengths that we are aware of but they may not be apparent to others. This makes me smile because it is a bit sneaky. When we are underestimated by others we are under less pressure to perform. When we are successful is using our ability there is an element of happy surprise and positive feedback from others.
Knowing your strengths can lead to confidence. As a therapist, I look for strengths in my clients and point them out as often as possible. You do not need to advertise them, but when possible it is good to have the ability to articulate them without sounding egotistical. Knowing your strength can guide carefully considered decisions and help you take on challenges that are appropriate and lead to growth.
